Jay’s DJ pick of the week is “Billboard Heart” by Deep Sea Diver
Jessica Dobson, the lead vocalist, guitarist, and mastermind behind Deep Sea Diver, began the project in 2009. Known for her incredible guitar chops, she’s performed with Beck, Conor Oberst, Spoon, and The Shins. Deep Sea Diver, however, is the most expressive Dobson has been with music to date, leaning heavily into indie rock’s spacious yet gritty sounds. This new single marks the first original release since the critically acclaimed 2020 album “Impossible Weight.”
Clocking in at 5 minutes and 50 seconds, “Billboard Heart” is a force to be reckoned with. The song opens up with an arpeggiated synth panning quickly from left to right. There’s a sense of panic with the beauty of the intro as she opens with the potent line, “My baby’s got a billboard heart that says please don’t revive”. She goes on to describe the reality of a dead-in-the-water relationship and coming to terms with its end. The chorus is tastefully ambiguous as she screams, “Punch out the clouds, follow me / Blue sky, rich death, swallow me”. There’s word that this is the beginning of a new album rollout for Deep Sea Diver which is set to arrive in early 2025. With such a strong showing on this first single, it’s fair to assume the album will be worth the wait.
