Jay’s Lightning 100 DJ Pick of The Week this week is “Edges” by Abigail Rose!
Nashville singer songwriter Abigail Rose has quietly been carving her name on musical landmarks in all corners of Music City. With a well-traveled yet grounded spirit on display, her journey thus far seems to reflect her attitude towards life. Rose creates her music with her longtime partner between trips and ventures across the country. That philosophy of exploration shines through in her willingness to let the space inform her music. The palette of tracks under Rose’s name were all recorded in different studios and environments, though her distinct identity weaves a cohesive thread through them all. Having been seen at The Basement, The Analog, and The East Room, it seems Rose will continue to venture far outside her comfort zone as she grows. Accordingly, “Edges” is her debut single, a blueprint of sorts for a blossoming artistic journey.
Borrowing as much from modern folk as from pop and alternative, “Edges”, on the surface, is hard to pin down. However, diving into the nuances of the track reveals an earnest confessional. The pre-chorus line, “I like you because but love you despite”, acts as the track’s mission statement. “Edges” is an acknowledgement of flaws, a plea for self-love and understanding. Instrumentally, there are layers that continue to reveal themselves upon multiple listens. Behind the acoustic guitars are some impressive production tricks and additional strings, gradually unfolding as the song pushes forward. By the end of the track, a beautiful soundscape encapsulates Rose’s introductory piece.
Rose will perform at Tunes For Transformation 2024, a benefit concert in support of The New Beginnings Center. TNBC is a nonprofit women’s-only gym dedicated to strengthening and improving the well-being of women, a more than worthy cause for such an event. Since her Surprise Valley EP in March, Rose has been steadily releasing new singles, the most recent being “Run Out of Me”, for which she recorded a live in-studio performance at The Sanctuary studios.
