Dan’s Lightning 100 DJ Pick of The Week this week is “Now or Never” by The Sheepdogs!
Canadian retro rockers The Sheepdogs are flirting with veteran status in the realm of indie soul. Having predated and cultivated many of the sounds we hear today from radio mainstays like Nathaniel Rateliff and JD McPherson, the group has stayed focused on creating earnest and true music. Originating in 2004, it’s been long since the band has carved out a prominent space among the southern rock revival movement. With a slew of awards and endorsements by rock legends, The Sheepdogs can comfortably write the songs they believe in. 2024’s Hell Together is proof, featuring standout gem “Now or Never”.
“Now or Never” features a softer display of songwriting wisdom from Ewan Currie and company. More in the vein of easy folk than gritty blues, the track feels naturally comfortable. The song feels like a familiar dream, with airy textures and warm production taboot. Sweeping harmonies reminiscent of Crosby, Stills, and Nash bring shades of color to the verses. The countryside hills and hot wind are almost palpable, with visions of vintage convertibles and fringe. An easygoing display of nostalgia and timelessness, the song knows it doesn’t need to be anymore than what it is.
Hell Together is the latest EP, their second on the year. Employing a strategy of short-form releases, The Sheepdogs seems to be focusing on writing focused songs rather than full-length projects. That strategy is paying off, as their most mature and informed tracks are coming now, 20 years into their tenure.
