This week on Community Corner, Brother Love talks with Claire London, an artist and member of Mamas in Music. Tiff Randol and Mary Leay founded Mamas in Music in 2019 as a nonprofit that aims to support mothers working in the music industry.
During the interview, London talks a bit about her experience becoming pregnant during the pandemic. There was uncertainty about whether she would be able to continue her music career. Claire London has been able to find refuge within Mamas in Music as a resource to lean on. Mamas in Music helps women face uncertainty as they learn to pursue music within the new context of family. Claire makes the case that mothers do not need to leave music because their life has changed; they just need to find another way to build a music career. She even talks about one less-immediately-obvious advantage that becoming a mother can have, and that is that becoming pregnant often causes non-essential elements of the hustle and bustle to drift away, and that a common experience is that women can learn to say no to opportunities that are not essential, and can have increased focus on what’s important.
Mamas in Music has local chapters in Nashville, New York, Los Angeles, and London. Volunteers run the organization as a membership-based community with local chapters, online member chats, and events. Membership is also open to those who support mothers, including fathers and other supporters. If you would like support, here is a link to their website.
