On this week’s episode of Community Corner, Brother Love is joined by Jordan Collins and Bryshawn Jemison from Our Place Nashville.
Our Place Nashville empowers adults in Nashville by providing affordable housing, meaningful jobs and inclusive communities. Our Place is open to both abled and disabled individuals in Nashville in search of opportunities for connection. Jordon Collins was one of the first residents in the organizations first Friendship House in 2015. He now works as the executive director. Our Place offers apartment complexes, which offer more independence, and Friendship Houses that include common living areas. Bryshawn is another resident who’s been with the organization since 2016. He enjoys the community’s weekly life skills classes. These classes include cooking demonstrations, fitness programs, and career development guidance.
Our Place offers a place where adults can live independently while being supported by their community. There are currently 70 friends with disabilities and 75 neurotypical housemates living at Our Place. They currently have a waitlist of 100 people, but anyone is welcome to participate in their weekly classes and other community events. Rent is offered at as low as $400 a month which serves as a huge opportunity for those who can’t afford the high Nashville rent prices. In a world where isolation is a huge issue, this community offers new relationships and face-to face-human connection. This is especially needed in a post-COVID world. The residents of Our Place see disabilities as a gift and seek to help people thrive with their disability. The community is open to anyone over the age of 21 who can live independently.
