Lightning 100 is excited to announce Southcourt and their song “Spraypaint” as our local artist of the week.

Casey’s pick for Local Artist of the Week is Southcourt. Southcourt is a 4-piece indie rock group based in Nashville. The band’s new song, “Spraypaint,” was released a few weeks ago on March 13th. Sourthcourt’s sound is defined by driving drums, spacey synths and guitars, and heartfelt lyrics. These elements have led the band to describe their sound as “festival-core,” as their songs sound like they were made for high-energy performances. The members of Southcourt were previously part of a project called 90’s Kids, whose sound leaned more towards 90’s pop punk, similar to Bowling For Soup. Lead singer Corey Mouch has shared that the members felt that 90’s Kids had creatively run its course, and they were ready for something new, Southcourt.

“Spraypaint” is a confessional song about new love and the recklessness that comes with it. This track fits the “festival-core” description to a tee. Warm acoustic guitars give the song a cozy feel while magical synths and reverbed effects create a huge, festival sound. With lyrics like “You can make a mess or a masterpiece, Just make it out of me,” Southcourt turns the messiness of spray paint into a beautiful metaphor for putting yourself out there.
