Dan’s DJ pick of the week is “After Me?” by Kashus Culpepper!
This is the debut single for the Nashville artist holding tastes of country, soul, and blues.
While Alabama-born Culpepper used his gifts from a young age in church, he recently began to cover songs which led to the writing of his own material during the 2020 pandemic while serving in the Navy. Since then, he began making a name for himself throughout southern venues, clenching the awe of his audiences with his deep, gritty voice and his mourning but passionate musicality.
This piece moseys along old southern roads with the cries of a former lover haunting Culpepper’s lyricism. His vocals flow with a sense of melancholic longing building into a question of how ‘her’ heart could be fulfilled with another. The track thoughtfully walks alongside Culpepper’s voice and guitar strumming, eventually crescendoing to a driving beat as the first chorus arrives, pushing the song forward in a fierce manner. By the final moments of the piece, his words “…how can she be happy ever after me?” reflect around our minds like a whirlwind, leaving us wanting more!
