Melissa’s DJ Pick for this week is “K[no]w God, K[no]w Peace” by Austin Grimm and Mellodose. Not only have Austin and Mellodose have been collaborating for the past ten years, but they are both members of the nationally touring band Roots of a Rebellion. As a result, they have cowritten many songs together. “K[no]w God, K[no]w Peace” was originally written for ROAR’s 2019 album, Shapes of a Soul. However, they held onto it and “the song evolved over time to its current and destined form”.
Mellodose is the music of Puerto Rican songwriter/producer, Marco Mar. Having fallen in love with roots reggae & dub music early on in life, the weight of the Jamaican genres is apparent in Mellodose’s music. It often incorporates pop, reggaeton, and acoustic elements as well. Meanwhile, Austin Grimm was born and raised in Saint Louis, MO. The lover of all styles of music moved to Nashville to attend Belmont University, where he met Mellodose. Together, along with the help of a few more friends, they founded Roots of a Rebellion. Though ROAR is on a break from touring & recording, Austin Grimm and Mellodose have continued to write, record, and release new music throughout 2021.
“K[no]w God, K[no]w Peace” is a song about the spiritual journey that features an undeniably reggae sound. With no sign of slowing down, Austin Grimm and Mellodose enter 2022 with the release of their first single, “K[no]w God, K[no]w Peace”, from their forthcoming collaborative EP. Additionally, Austin Grimm will be leading the Marley’s Memory show at Exit/In this Saturday, February 5th. The show will celebrate the life, legacy, and music of Robert Nesta Marley.
