“McKenzie” by Houndmouth is Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week! Houndmouth is an alternative blues band based in New Albany, Indiana. The band formed in the summer of 2011, and started out performing live at local venues. After performing at the 2012 SXSW music festival, they signed to Rough Trade Records. So far, Houndmouth has released four studio albums, three EPs, and five singles. Currently, their lineup consists of guitarist Matt Myers, bassist Sam Filiatreau, and drummer Shane Cody, with all three members providing vocals.

At its core, “McKenzie” sounds and feels like a timeless blues tune. This is reflected throughout the song, especially in the simplistic bass line and groovy guitar riff. These instrument are extremely clean, as opposed to being noticably processed with effects. Meanwhile, the drums and keys make use of both acoustic and electronic sounds, without interfering with the timeless vibes. Overall, the instrumental is pleasant and peppy, with a hint of joy. Although the vocals sound upbeat and happy, the lyrics say otherwise. Nonetheless, the production behind “McKenzie” retains a nostalgic feel that few other songs successfully capture.

“McKenzie” is one of ten songs on Houndmouth’s most recent album, Good For You. The album is available on streaming services, with physical copies sold through their merch store. Currently, Houndmouth is on tour, and will continue performing live throughout the spring and summer months. Information regarding their touring schedule, including an upcoming show at the Brooklyn Bowl, is available here.
