This week, Melissa’s DJ Pick is “As It Was” by Harry Styles! While Harry’s name is typically associated with pop due to his wild success with former band One Direction, his solo music explores a variety of genres and features a more mature sound. “As It Was” boasts an 80’s feel, with many comparing it to A-ha’s classic, “Take On Me”. Additionally, with a catchy chorus, dreamy verses and an intoxicating bridge, there is no part of the song that you don’t want to dance to.
Harry’s career in music dates back to 2010 with his audition for The X Factor UK. From there, One Direction began it’s record-breaking ascent to stardom, with Harry in the center. The band released five hit albums, and parted ways in 2015. However, Harry’s solo career only proves to continue the climb. As his new music branches out into different genres, his fanbase continues to grow. Harry also continuously shows his support for the LGBTQ+ community and serves as a role model for breaking gender norms. He has been scrutinized for wearing dresses in photoshoots, but we think he looks great.
“As It Was” is the first single in anticipation of Harry’s third album. Entitled Harry’s House, it is set for release on May 20th. The music video for “As It Was” is a colorful, artistic experience that will leave you scrambling for the replay button, created in collaboration with Ukrainian GRAMMY Award-nominated director Tanu Muino.
