Mia Morris – Gone My Way: DJ Pick of the Week

At only 16 years old, Mia Morris is on her way to becoming a giant in the Nashville music scene. A child drumming prodigy originally from Indianapolis, the high school sophomore now writes, plays, and produces her own music from a basement studio in her family’s home. Her most recent single, “Gone My Way,” co-written by Brother Love and Alex Haddad of East Nashville’s Them Vibes, is Jayson’s DJ Pick of the Week.

It’s obvious from “Gone My Way” that Morris has influences all across the world of rock. The song references Joan Jett and The Who directly, but she listens to everything from the B-52’s to Beastie Boys. Her Youtube channel, which has nearly 50 thousand subscribers, puts these favorites on display in popular videos of the young multi-instrumentalist covering every part of a song on her own. She can do a lot more than play, though. Also a talented writer, Morris has over 30 original tracks out under her name.

“I’ve been writing quite a few songs lately about the general idea of making your own decisions and individualism. Those are certainly not new ideas but for many reasons, I think they are ideas that I really need to hear and embrace at this age and state of my life and music career,” Morris wrote of “Gone My Way” in the description of its music video. Unsigned and happy about it, she has total authority over her songs at every stage of their development. “Don’t want you trying to fix me / Because I don’t care what you think I should be,” she sings defiantly from behind her stand up drum kit as two more Mia’s, dressed in different outfits and wearing wigs, play guitar and bass besides her. A current artist in residency at 3rd & Lindsley every Tuesday in January, it’s clear that Morris is just getting started.
