“First High” by Nikki Lane is Keith’s DJ Pick of the Week! Known as the “First Lady of Outlaw Country”, this Nashville-based artist is continually making waves in the world of alt-country. Surprisingly, this South Carolina native didn’t write her first song until she was 25 years old. Despite her late start, Nikki Lane has built a successful music career with her unapologetically candid and catchy country melodies.

“First High” is the first single released in preparation for the release of Nikki Lane’s fourth album, Denim & Diamonds. This song sets a new tone for Nikki Lane, as it is heavily influenced by the sounds of blues rock, rather than traditional outlaw country. With a funky bass line and electric guitar, “First High” differs from Nikki’s prior albums in a way that makes listeners wonder if this Highway Queen has decided to lean more towards the rock genre. Regardless, the transition to a more blues rock-oriented sound is effortless for Nikki Lane whose veins have always run with the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll.

“First High” is a song about the thrill of experiencing life’s firsts. “This song is about chasing that feeling of the first roller coaster, the first drag of a cigarette, that first kiss,” says Nikki. “Those moments are harder to come by the older we get, yet only get better each time. The video captures that feeling of being young in a small town on a summer day, and the lack of inhibition that came with it.”

As of now, there are no upcoming Nashville tour dates for Nikki Lane. However, she will be playing The Caverns in Pelham, Tennessee on September 11. Check out the details on the show here. Until then, make sure to keep up with Nikki Lane through her Facebook and Instagram. Additionally, watch out for her new album, Denim & Diamonds, releasing September 23.
