Stephanie’s DJ Pick for this week is “Kno Me” by Jerry Paper! “Kno Me” is the lead single from Jerry Paper’s latest album, Free Time, which was released in April of this year. Jerry Paper is the musical persona of Lucas Nathan, a nonbinary musician hailing from Los Angeles. Their third release via Stone Throw, Free Time is the musical expression of Paper’s journey towards embracing their individuality and identity as a newly “out” non-binary artist.
“Coming out as nonbinary was a huge way for me to know myself deeply, and something about sharing that with the world made me care less about how people see me,” says Paper in a press release for their newest project. The imagery for “Know Me” comes from the first time they chose to wear a dress in public. “I kept repeating ‘f*** you, you don’t know me’ in my head whenever I saw anybody as a way to center myself.” For listeners, this song and album pose just one request: don’t take yourself too seriously, and have fun!
