Its Twofer Tuesday here at Lightning 100! DJ Jayson and Rhizome Productions’ Matt Leff are back for a special episode featuring two beers from Yazoo. Keeping it local, they’ve got the seasonal Big Pepé Cinnamon Stout, followed by the 50th anniversary Exit/In Lager.
First up is the Big Pepé, which is a barrel aged imperial milk stout. This beer is distilled and produced by Pennington Distilling Company in The Nations. Aged in local, fresh Davidson reserve whisky barrels, this beer has been in the barrel for about six months. It comes in at 10% ABV, which is partly due to the beer, and partly because of the aging process.
Up front, you really get a good taste of the cinnamon, followed by the whisky in the back end. It’s not an overpowering cinnamon flavor, and it’s actually quite pleasant. It’s a delicious imperial stout that makes for the perfect holiday beer. If your lactose intolerant, you’ll want to be careful with this one since it’s a milk stout. Since it’s made with lactose sugar, you might just pass this one along to your friends.
Next up, we’ve got the special Exit/In Lager to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Nashville wouldn’t be what it is today without a venue like Exit/In, so this is a great way to pay homage to the venue. At first look, the label is a replication of the walls of the venue, covered in artists that have played shows in the past.
It’s a Mexican lager, coming in at 5% ABV, making it the perfect beer for a concert. This one is easy drinking and you’ll want to have it in your hand while watching your favorite artist. This may be one that goes past the holiday season and makes a permanent spot here in Nashville. One thing we know for sure is that it’s definitely going in Matt’s fridge.
Both of these beers come in 16 oz cans and can be found at The Taproom in Madison, as well as your finer beer retailers. Of course, you can also purchase the Exit/In Lager at the venue.
