Stephanie’s DJ Pick of the Week features indie pop love song “Hold U” from Indigo De Souza. “Hold U” is one of the featured singles off her sophomore album “Any Shape You Take” released this year. “Hold U” highlights the love one can experience in their lifetime. It’s a song that just makes you want to dance with your friends and truly express yourself.
Born in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, she spent most of her time trying to fit in with those around her. As one of the only mixed-race students in her town, De Souza felt she had to conform to the other students. Her mother, a visual artist, wouldn’t allow this, and enrolled her in music classes. At a young age, De Souza learned to express herself through her songwriting.
“Hold U” is the perfect example of how Indigo De Souza expresses not only herself, but others around her as well. The music video showcases queer love and the way those relationships can give you such a strong sense of community. The shots of De Souza surrounded by her friends shows the love and support she feels from her community.
In an interview with Pitchfork, De Souza explained how her relationships gave her clarity in her life and art.
“When I became friends with people who celebrate joy, I realized that I was surrounded by a lot of darkness before. but it’s OK to dance and laugh. Even though it’s all fleeting, it’s still important.”
