Jon Batiste’s long awaited album We Are is here and we are digging Rev’s DJ Pick of the Week, “Freedom.” With funky keyboard notes and a blaring trumpet, “Freedom” by Jon Batiste is sure to get you moving and grooving on your feet. Spending nine months on his album, during the height on the pandemic, Batiste created a masterpiece comprised of 13 jazz-infused tracks. We can’t wait to spin this song, along with many others!

Batiste has worked as the musical director for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert since 2015. He is also known for creating the score for the Pixar film Soul with Trent Renzor and Atticus Rose. With these notable jobs, he made time to work on We Are and ensure the album encapsulates the spirit and soul of humanity. Each track builds upon one another to create a sense and feel of togetherness. In an interview with our own Rev Keith from this past February, Batiste stated, “The record is not any specific genre or any specific feel other than the feel of community. It’s a very conscious record.”

“Freedom” comes out swinging with Batiste’s energetic vocals and soulful background singers. The upbeat tempo mirrors the song’s message of living freely and enjoying life. We can all take some inspiration from Batiste and listen to the music and feel free to be ourselves.

Jon Batiste performed “Freedom” on The Late Late Show with James Corden by filming a retro Hairspray inspired 60’s video. Check it out below!
