The up-and-coming electronic pop band MUNA get fans excited for new music with their latest single “Silk Chiffon.” The song, featuring Phoebe Bridgers, has stolen the spot as Stephanie’s DJ Pick of the Week!

Since debuting their music in 2014, MUNA has come together as a group to truly understand what they want to accomplish with their music. When the band was first created, they didn’t want to label themselves as a queer band. They weren’t even sure if they wanted to be out at all, but they spent some time reflecting on what that would mean for them. MUNA decided that is exactly what they want to be – a queer alt-rock band.

The trio spoke with Pink News, where they explained that labeling themselves as such connected them to the kind of music they were making.

We’re asking questions about love and power, and [with] the way that we approach songwriting, I would say this kind of fits into what I think of as queer culture.

“Silk Chiffon” has become almost a queer anthem. With MUNA and Bridgers working together, it’s pretty obvious that this single has everyone in their feelings. “Silk Chiffon” represents the way it feels to be with someone that you truly love. It’s a light, airy feeling that keeps life exciting.

To keep the theme of having a queer relationship, MUNA took a very creative route when making the music video. The video is MUNA’s rendition of the 2000 comedy But I’m a Cheerleader. The movie is about a young girl sent to conversion therapy camp after her parents find out she’s a lesbian. The music video hit every point of the movie, all the way down to the monochromatic pink and blue outfits. It’s a fun spoof of a classic LGBTQ+ movie, and pairs perfectly with the single.
