Dan’s DJ pick this week is “Daily News” by Bartees Strange! This track dropped a couple of weeks ago as a bonus song on his 2022 album Farm To Table.
Originally from Oklahoma, Bartees Leon Cox began his music career as a child by traveling across the state to perform in opera productions and churches. The singer moved around the northeast throughout adulthood, eventually landing in Washington D.C. working for an environmental nonprofit. In 2020 he released his widely acclaimed debut album, Live Forever, which led him to sign a deal with British record label 4AD; and his 2022 album Farm To Table earned him a place on tour with Phoebe Bridgers. So far, 2023 is shaping up to be a good year for Strange as he prepares for his international tour this summer. Local fans can catch him performing on June 25th in Centennial Park along with Clairo, boygenius, and Dijon.
“Daily News” is an ethereal blend of softly plucked guitar riffs and Strange’s beautiful melodic harmonies. Lyrically, the song seems to explore the profound emotion he feels after walking away from an intense relationship. With lines like “Picture me again, floating off to see if I could feel again”, Strange expresses this heavy uncertainty. As the track goes on, his subtle and emotive production builds up to an electrifying release; featuring thundering drums, saxophone riffs, and stacks of trance-like harmonies.
