This week we’ve been loving “Top People” by Eagle Johnson, Casey’s DJ pick of the week! This track was released in late January, as the third song on his latest album, Wild Heart.
Eagle Johnson began his music career by making a name for himself in the local music scene of Jacksonville, Florida. Originally going by the name ‘Screamin’ Eagle’, the singer spent some time in Memphis honing in on his signature style before eventually changing his artist name and moving to Music City. His song ‘Mexico’ was discovered by Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Bob Marley’s producer, who agreed to mix Eagle’s “All My Friends”. He was just starting to form his audience under his 2017 album, Tennessee Beach, with Paradigm before the pandemic interrupted his growing success. This didn’t stop Eagle, who plans on kicking off his third studio album this year with a short film and new tour dates.
“Top People” is a retro-steeped, rock & roll track featuring rhythmic guitar riffs, layered synths, and soft-shaken percussion. The raw, live-to-tape tune is reminiscent of early blues and rock music, produced by Eagle himself and Jack Tellmann. The record was made at Bomb Shelter Studios in Nashville, already earning praise from Patrick Carney of The Black Keys.
