Our ONErpm Hitmaker Alert for this week is Julia Pratt’s “Backseat!”
22-year-old Julia Pratt is a rising star. She’s performed with artists such as Hozier, The Head and the Heart, and Adam Melchor. She recently collaborated with Mt. Joy on their single, “A Little Love,” which we’ve been spinning here at Lightning100. Pratt combines her vulnerable songwriting with her pop and R&B influences in her latest EP, “Two to Tango” out now! You can catch Julia Pratt live on tour with Mipso in February- tickets and info here.
“Backseat” opens with a slow introduction of the storyline; This song is about maintaining a relationship that you know isn’t doing you any good. After the first verse, a quick drum rhythm is introduced as a satisfying surprise for the ears. The lyrics that switch off from “I think I’ve had enough tonight,” to “I think you’ve had enough tonight,” reflect the push & pull of love that has already run its course. The outro is a quick switch into a new melody with the production slowly building up in the background. Then, Julia guides us out with her incredible vocals. Overall, this track’s dynamic range perfectly mirrors the feeling of being in a relationship that does nothing but cause frustration.
