Dan’s DJ pick this week is “The Drop” by alt-rock band Sports Team. Based in the UK, five of the six members met while studying at the University of Cambridge. Sports Team got their start playing at local pub Portland Arms in Northern Cambridge. Formed in 2016, they released two EP’s before launching their debut album “Deep Down Happy,” in June of 2020. This album received four out of five stars from British music magazine-turned-website, New Musical Express (NME). It also earned a Mercury Prize nomination, an award given the best album released in the UK by a British or Irish act.
Their second album Gulp!, featuring “The Drop,” debuted on September 23, 2022. Acquiring another four star rating by NME, Gulp! mixes genres such as punk and indie sleaze. The album discusses existentialism, pokes fun at negative reviews, and delves into the band’s experience living together along with all the shenanigans/arguments that would ensue.
“The Drop” is the third track off Gulp! Drawing inspiration from the Tang ping movement in China where people are rejecting societal pressures to overwork themselves, Sports Team criticizes corporate culture. The song opens up with, “Oh, Katie died, just waiting for the right time to retire.” Commenting on the negative effects of getting stuck in a routine with promises unfulfilled, the band says to just “let it drop.” Going into more detail they advise listeners to “wash [their] hands of all these childish plans and let ’em die.” A guitar heavy track, “The Drop” will have you fired up and ready to dismantle the rat race.
