Jayson: “Watching the Omnibus” by The Bug Club
Jayson’s pick this week comes from the Welsh indie rock band The Bug Club. The band’s newest single, “Watching the Omnibus,” will be featured on their upcoming album Every Single Muscle, which is set to be released on May 29th! The Bug Club is a duo made up of Sam Willmet and Tilly Harris. With a sound defined by distorted vocals, lo-fi, punchy guitar riffs, and playful lyrics, The Bug Club evokes the sounds of 80s UK punk, such as the Dead Kennedys or Operation Ivy. “Watching the Omnibus,” clocking in at only one minute and nineteen seconds, is a concise yet powerful tune with lyrics that ponder loneliness and the reasons to live. With a quick tempo and driving drums, the band maintains high energy throughout the entire song. The choruses feature a dizzying repeating riff that adds some rhythmic variation to this fast punk song.

Dan: “Pawa!” by Asha Puthli and Say She She
Dan’s pick for this week is bringing back disco with a track from Asha Puthli, and the trio Say She She. “Pawa!” is the newest single from both artists: Puthli, a jazz icon who made an appearance on Ornette Coleman’s classic Science Fiction, and Say She She, a discodelic funk trio made up of Piya Malik, Sabrina Mileo Cunningham, and Nya Gazelle Brown. Released the day after International Women’s Day, this track celebrates the power of togetherness among women. “Pawa!” is a beautiful blend of funky bass lines, hypnotizing three-part harmonies from Say She She, and a moving monologue from Puthli that closes out the song with, “People need people. And when we’re together with people we love, that’s where our power comes from. And it also comes from within you. You have power! We have power!”
