Steph’s DJ Pick of the week is “Something’s Got A Hold On Me” by The Cactus Blossoms!
This ditty has a retro, upbeat feel to it. It reminisces of 70s rock artists such as the Beatles and Steely Dan. The Cactus Blossoms themselves are an alternative country/indie folk brother duo from Minnesota: Jack Torrey and Page Burkum. The group takes heavy inspiration from early country and rock and roll- giving them that classic feel to their sound.
“Something’s Got A Hold On Me” is the first track off of their latest album release, Every Time I Think About You. The song possesses beautiful metaphorical imagery. Lines such as “Hummin like a honey bee… Honey’s always worth the trip” and “If ya take a late night drive, stay awake and stay alive, skeletons on 36” paint the picture of living in rural America. The song highlights the struggle of achieving the American Dream. More specifically, the comparison between getting what you want to what you need. Accompanied by raw instrumental tracks and sibling harmonies, the song screams classic rock and roll anthem. Be sure to add this to any roadtripping playlist.
Be sure to catch The Cactus Blossoms on their tour, and stream “Something’s Got A Hold On Me” wherever you listen to music. Maybe put it on a cassette tape to get that authentic Americana feel. Or take the easy route and listen to the song below!
