This week the interns chose their favorite road trip songs, so get ready for a drive down the Tennessee backroads and listen to our intern’s picks of the week!
Gracie’s Intern Pick: “Surefire” by Wilderado
Gracie’s intern pick of the week is “Surefire” by Wilderado. The Tulsa, Oklahoma band is known for their indie folk and alternative rock sound, blending warm vocals, layered guitars, and easygoing melodies. “Surefire” was first released in 2019 and later appeared on the band’s self-titled debut album, Wilderado. I chose “Surefire” for this week’s must-play road trip song because it has the perfect windows-down feeling. The song moves at a steady, relaxed pace, but still feels bright and uplifting enough to keep the drive going. It has a catchy chorus and dreamy open-road energy, taking me back to when I had it on repeat while I was spending time off the coast of Washington one summer.
Ella’s Intern Pick: “Blood Muscle Skin & Bone” by Brandi Carlile
Ella’s intern pick of the week is “Blood Muscle Skin & Bone” by Brandi Carlile. The critically acclaimed singer, songwriter, and producer is from Ravensdale, Washington. She dropped out of high school and busked on the streets of Seattle, later becoming an 11-time Grammy-nominated artist. Carlilie’s sound is comprised of a dynamic fusion of Americana, folk, country, and rock. She seamlessly shifts from a vulnerable whisper to a gritty belt, perfect to sing along to on your road trips. The track stands out for its high-energy, bluesy Americana sound. The combo of Carlile’s gritty vocals and Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready on guitar makes for the ultimate rock and roll anthem. Lyrically, she conveys that we are merely flesh and bone but are susceptible to heartbreak, while still exploring the depths of love within the human condition. “Blood Muscle Skin & Bone” is the quintessential road trip song because of the driving blues-rock tempo, empowering vocals, and a tribute to home.
Josh’s Intern Pick: “Box in the Basement” by Nothing Nowhere
Josh’s intern pick of the week is “Box in the Basement,” by Nothing Nowhere. The song was released on January 6 as a single. Joe Mulherin does all of his music independently by writing, singing, and producing his own music. In 2024, Joe completed a huge milestone by writing 4 albums throughout the year. The best part is that he streams some of his production/songwriting process on Twitch, so fans can watch and listen to potential new music. This is one of those songs that I always try to play while on a road trip. The vibe is very energetic and always keeps me going. If your looking to get some energy on a long road trip, I would definitely give this song a listen.
