Ella’s Intern Pick: “Sweater Weather” by The Neighborhood
Ella’s intern pick of the week is “Sweater Weather” by The Neighborhood. My dad would play this song nonstop, saying he felt a connection to it. As a high schooler at the time, I kept wondering why a 47-year-old man connected to it so much. I felt like it was supposed to be mine. That angst was for a teen, not a grown man, and I wondered what made him think that angst was required, but hey, he loved it. Sure, I could get with it the first few plays, but after the 3rd play on your weekly trip to the grocery store with your evidently angsty father, I could do without.
Josh’s Intern Pick: “Tennessee Whiskey” by Chris Stapleton
Josh’s intern pick of the week is “Tennessee Whiskey” by Chris Stapleton. My Dad loved the song since it first came out in May of 2015. Whether it was a road trip or a family outing, the song always played at least once. The song is great overall, but it has been overplayed for years by my Dad. Even though it’s overplayed in my house, it’s still one of those songs that always reminds me of my family.
Gracie’s Intern Pick: “Rock Lobster” by The B-52’s
Gracie’s intern pick of the week is “Rock Lobster” by The B-52’s. Released in 1978, the song became one of the band’s most recognizable tracks and helped introduce their quirky new wave sound. The B-52’s formed in Athens, Georgia, and are known for their playful vocals, surf-rock-inspired guitars, and eccentric style. “Rock Lobster” is definitely a song that stands out, with its strange lyrics, animal noises, and chaotic energy. For this week’s theme, I chose “Rock Lobster” because it’s a song my dad likes, but I’ve never been able to get behind it. While I can appreciate how fun and unique it is, the random sound effects and offbeat delivery make it a little too weird for me. It is one of those songs that feels impossible to ignore, but also impossible for me to fully enjoy.
