This week, Keith’s DJ Pick is “Sea Star” by St. Paul and The Broken Bones! Based in Birmingham, Alabama, St. Paul and The Broken Bones is an eight-piece soul band that’s been together since 2012. Over the course of their career, they’ve performed at Coachella, Lollapalooza, and even shared a stage with rock legend Elton John. Nominated for an Emmy, their remarkable composition skills are what set them apart from other artists. Whether it’s funky, horn-centered interludes or experimental, synth-focused melodies St. Paul and The Broken Bones possess a range unmatched.

Known for producing concept albums, their upcoming LP Angels in Science Fiction zeros in on life, faith, and beauty. Front-man Paul Janeway intended the album to read as a series of letters dedicated to his daughter. He explains the idea for “Sea Star” originally came from a story about a man rescuing washed-up starfish by placing them back into the ocean. The man is told his actions won’t make a difference in the grand scheme of things. Nevertheless, he persists, as he still made a difference to each individual starfish saved. In addition, Janeway explains, Having a child can give people a feeling of redemption, and a renewed sense of purpose—especially when they’re feeling lost and empty. That theme found its way into ‘Sea Star.’”

Powered by falsetto and warm, dissonant harmonies, “Sea Star” is a tale of compassion. A lesson to always try to positively impact and influence those around you. With lyrics, “You are the strong tide pulling me back into sea. Now I can’t wait to live again,” St. Paul and the Broken Bones highlights the effect we have on others. If we all do our best to approach one another with love, each tossing another starfish into the sea, we just might see the whole ocean flourish.
