This week, Stephanie’s DJ pick is “Amnesia” by synth-pop band, M83! Formed in France in 1999, the band is now based in Los Angeles. Originally a duo, Anthony Gonzalez currently remains the sole member. With 9 studio albums and over 10 million monthly Spotify listeners, M83 consistently shows his ability to innovate. The 6th album was even nominated for a Grammy! Released on March 17, 2023, Fantasy is Gonzalez’s most vulnerable album. Written as an escape from the world we live in today, the album marks a new era for M83.
“Amnesia” is the third track off of Fantasy. Charged with nostalgia, this song feels like the musical embodiment of glitter and holographic material. Synths and guitar distortion fill your ears while Gonzalez sings, “I’m in love with the darkness. It’s just a sound. Nothing wrong with some sadness. It’s just a sound.” His voice perfectly blends with the instrumentals, adding to the 80’s retrofuturism vibe of the track. Amassing 1 million global streams within the first week, “Amnesia” will have you breaking out your Walkman and rewatching Back to the Future.
