This week, Stephanie’s DJ Pick is “1979” by Airpark, featuring Molly Parden! While this single was released on March 24, 2023, “1979” was originally released in 1996 by The Smashing Pumpkins. Based here in Nashville, Airpark was formed in 2017 by brothers Michael Ford Jr. and Ben Ford. Working with artists such as the band Tennis and St. Lucia to produce their works, Airpark has touched base in a multitude of genres.

Spinning the song in a new direction, Airpark strips down “1979” from its classic 90’s alternative sound to a soft, folk jam. Reminiscing on his childhood, Billy Corgan packed “1979” full of the highs and lows of being a teen. Hitting all the same notes of nostalgia, Airpark breathes new life into the track. They do an amazing job at paying tribute to the original while still making it their own. Breathy vocals and calming acoustic guitar pair well with one another, giving a sunny and bright feel to “1979.”
