Steph’s DJ pick of the week is Declan McKenna’s “Mulholland’s Dinner and Wine”. Debuting as the fourth single off of his upcoming album What Happened to the Beach?, this track perfectly combines McKenna’s unique style and creativity with a new and exciting sound.
With his last album being released in 2020, it was only time before we were graced with another project from Declan McKenna. What Happened to the Beach? is McKenna’s 5th studio album, co-produced by Gianluca Buccellati (Lana Del Rey, Arlo Parks, Tei Shi). The pair worked together on the forthcoming project in LA, with the city inspiring much of McKenna’s latest single.
“Mulholland’s Dinner and Wine” showcases McKenna’s unique style and personality in an exciting new sound profile for the artist. The indie rock/psychedelic pop production of the track is a superb match to McKenna’s vulnerable, but deceptively lighthearted lyrics. Many elements of the track, such as production, lyrics, and style, feature a newfound level of maturity to McKenna, while still containing his alluring, down-to-earth storytelling.
