Rev’s DJ Pick of the Week is “Hammer and the Nail” by Blackberry Smoke.

Originating from Atlanta Georgia, Blackberry Smoke is a southern-country rock band from the early 2000s. Many know them from one of their albums, specifically the album Holding All The Roses. album is the first independent album to reach number one on Billboard Country Album. Since then, they have released four more albums, three of which have charted at number one on multiple Billboard Lists.

“Hammer and the Nail” is a single from the 2024 album Be Right Here.

Recorded in Nashville’s own historic RCA Studio A, with legendary Grammy-Award-winning producer David Cobb, the album is a lovely yet vulnerable statement on life.

As a result, the album consisted of several songs about the battle of morality and thinking patterns. With themes such as the glass being half full/empty, obstacles from a child’s perspective, the struggles of parenthood, and much more, there is something for everyone at any stage in life.

“Hammer and the Nail” revolves around following in your parent’s footsteps.

The song tells the story of a young man; who despite facing the same downfalls as his father, is still caught up in a generational curse. Toward the end of the song, the main character realizes who he has become, and has chosen to blame the world for it. Saying “Like my Daddy before me / This is where the apple fell / Beatin’ the odds and comin’ up roses / Aint my story to tell / The whole world swings the hammer / And I’m the nail “
