Steph’s DJ pick of the week is “Bovine Excision” by Samia!
Samia is back with her latest release “Bovine Excision,” the lead single for her upcoming album “Bloodless” out on April 25th!
“Bovine Excision” uses lyrics like “Doll eyes red in the litmus / I felt the pea, can I eat it?” with visual striking elements and connections to iconic references in media to paint the picture of attempting to become the impossible leaving someone drained. Lyrics progress from “I wanna be impossible” to “And drained, drained bloodless,” showing the damage that chasing an unattainable ideal has left on Samia.
Samia uses these vulnerable lyrics in tandem with vocals that build throughout the song. There are stacked vocals that appear throughout the course of the song until they are the main focus at the end of the song, encompassing the emotion behind being “drained bloodless.”
In her official music video for “Bovine Excision,” Samia uses visuals that reflect some of her lyrics like “Diet Dr. Pepper, Raymond Carver Sitting in the bathtub.” The frames descend into frantic changing shots as the vocals become more passionate, cutting from those lyric-referencing scenes to visuals showing Samia in something from a horror movie.
