Steph’s DJ pick of the week is “LIE DOWN..” by Saya Gray!

Last week, Saya Gray dropped her latest album SAYA. Heavily influenced by Joni Mitchell, Led Zeppelin, and The Beatles, this new album is nothing short of a masterpiece. Gray, after experiencing a rocky relationship, took a trip to Japan where she traveled in search of her identity. She carried a guitar with her everywhere she went, anticipating any spark of inspiration. It was in these vulnerable moments that SAYA was born. Upon returning home, she brought to life the complex emotions she documented away. SAYA is a raw expression of Gray’s inner struggle and healing. It represents not only the pain she has endured, but also the growth that has manifested in response to her experiences.

“LIE DOWN..” the final song on the album, is a moody, fast-paced track that questions the impact we have on people once we are gone. “If I lie down in this life, would you mention me?” The ultimate determinant of our worth is if someone feels called to speak highly of you when you are not there to witness it. Saya is calling attention to the fear of being worthless once she cannot provide something to this person. The music video, directed by Jennifer Chang, depicts a statue being broken apart, signifying the ways in which other people can chisel away our own worth. Gray watches from a distance, witnessing the judgement and destruction of her statue from the sidelines. She has no ability to defend herself as a bystander, and it is easy to see the feelings of betrayal set in. This video highlights the vulnerability and lack of power described in her lyrics. “I can make your dust turn to sparkle / I can do a lot for you if you take a chance” We can offer all that we have to a person, but it ultimately comes down to their own perception of our value.
