Jayson’s pick: Young Gun Silver Fox, ‘Just For Pleasure.’

On Young Gun Silver Fox’ album “Pleasure,” track six is titled, ‘Just For Pleasure.’ This track features a funk groove, floating vocals, and a gnarly bass line. In this song, Andy Platts, the vocalist, calls for a night of relaxation to his lover. He sings in a tenor register, “Let’s just spend the night together, and have a good time…” This track is perfect for setting a romantic mood and dancing in the kitchen with a special somebody. Dan’s Pick: Royel Otis, ‘who’s your boyfriend’

Royel Otis’ new project titled ‘hickey’ features thirteen tracks that reminisce on young love and the inevitable heartbreak that follows. One of the hardest hitting tracks lyrically in this collection is ‘who’s your boyfriend.” The production on this track is incredibly lush. This track features driving drums, soaring synth parts, surreal guitars, and airy vocals. Over the instrumental, Royel Otis sings, “‘Cause you’re sleepin’ with him, but it’s me you’re thinking about.” This complex relationship is illustrated in a bitter attitude that compliments the sonic elements of this song perfectly. Stephanie’s pick: Geese, ‘Cobra’

On Geese’s latest release, “Getting Killed,” one of the highlight tracks is ‘Cobra.’ The track opens with organ parts layered on top of piano chords, and slowly evolves into a laid back ballad. Here, Cameron Winter writes abstract lyrics, he sings in his baritone style, “You should be shame’s only daughter, whatever he’s got in his hand…” This track is perfect for chilling out, as the soothing instrumentation and ethereal lyrics paints a relaxing picture. Casey’s pick: JP Olsen, ‘Barge of Sorrow’

On this new track titled, ‘Barge of Sorrow,’ JP Olsen narrates his thoughts on his friend’s worn out couch that this track is named after. Olsen sings in his own style on top of strumming acoustic guitars, drums, a driving bassline, and growling guitar melodies. Olsen’s DIY style shines through on this track, making the listening experience feel authentic and intimate. Rev’s pick: Max McNown, ‘Better Me For You (Brown Eyes)’

Released in 2024, ‘Better Me For You (Brown Eyes),’ is a love song, where McNown is both reflective of his own character and appreciative of his new partner. Max McNown writes about the wonderful surprises he has found in his new love, he sings, “…you’re everything that I’m not, everythin’ that I want there’s a God n’ baby, you’re proof…” This track features country stylings; slide, a half time feel, strumming acoustic guitars, religious undertones and tasteful mandolin.
