This week’s Lightning 100 pick for Local Artist of the Week are artists Bre Kennedy and Tenille Townes with their song “The Pen!”

Bre Kennedy and Tenille Townes are two popular independent musicians, settling here not long after each other. Townes grew up in Alberta, Canada, and got into country music in the car, hearing artists like Dolly Parton and Shania Twain. Later, she released her first radio single, “Home Now,” at the age of 15! She moved to Nashville in 2013, opening for artists such as George Strait and Miranda Lambert.

Kennedy, growing up in a musical family, was exposed to artists like Tom Petty and Aretha Franklin. She started performing in Los Angeles, also around 15. Since coming to Nashville in 2015, she has become a fixture in the local Nashville scene, releasing three studio albums.

Both artists differ musically; Kennedy primarily blends pop and folk, whereas Townes is primarily country with hints of folk. These two styles were incorporated into their upcoming new single, “The Pen.” This single combines Kennedy’s raspy, poppy vocals and Towne’s raw country vocals impeccably, a goosebump inducing performance by the two. The inspiration behind writing the song was the reminder that they have the freedom to write the stories of their lives. The duo sings the simple yet powerful lyrics, “…nobody goes as planned, the pen is in my hand.” Listen to “The Pen” on Lightning 100, or use the link below!
