Lt. Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week is “Sally, When The Wine Runs Out” by ROLE MODEL!

ROLE MODEL has completely turned pop country on its head with his latest album, “Kansas Anymore”. Born and raised in Maine, Tucker Pillsbury became ROLE MODEL in 2017 releasing an EP that would lead to a collaboration between him and Mac Miller. His debut album “Rx” from 2022 is not like what you’ll hear on Dan’s pick this week. It was mostly explicit, alternative-leaning, and heavily shaped by his life in Los Angeles at the time. So, “Kansas Anymore” was a risky jump, but with massive reward. “Sally, When The Wine Runs Out” appears on the deluxe version of his adventurous new record and is now his most listened-to single.

This track is undeniably catchy, blending Pillsbury’s usual themes of heartbreak with a clever country twist. It details Pillsbury’s kismet encounter with a southern girl, set to honky tonk organ and slide guitar. Lines like “Heard through a friend she’s a born-again wild card” might make you think it’s a Jon Pardi song. The recording feels live but polished, with crisp harmonies and playful “woo”s. What seems to resonate most with fans is Pillsbury’s genuine embrace of this new sound. While many artists dabble in country, Pillsbury leans in with authenticity, letting himself have fun without forcing it. “Sally” feels like a natural evolution, drawing on fresh inspiration while staying true to his voice. On tour, the song takes on new life as he invites an audience member on stage each night to be “Sally,” making the performance feel just as spontaneous and personal as the song itself.
