Jayson’s DJ Pick of the Week is “Highway Queen” by Mt. Joy!
“Highway Queen” is Mt. Joy’s newest track since the 2022 LP release of Orange Blood. The band debuted the song live a few years ago and, since then, continually played it on the road.
Frontman Matt Quinn wrote “Highway Queen” and co-produced it with Jon Gilbert. The track was independently funded and released on the band’s Bloom Field Records.
The release of “Highway Queen” precedes Mt. Joy’s upcoming headline run at Madison Square Garden, Hollywood Bowl and Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
“Highway Queen” is sonically warm and deeply personal. The track describes Quinn’s experience with loving someone that reminds him of himself.
Quinn’s lyrics reinforce that authentic love is human and that embracing imperfection leads to stronger understanding. With sincerity, Quinn sings “No, I ain’t scared of your demons / That’s just what makes you a real thing.”
Lyrical and instrumental authenticity pour from “Highway Queen.” The track extends Mt. Joy’s beloved sound by featuring energetic acoustic strums, resonant basslines and Quinn’s passionate, soaring vocals. The track’s anthemic choruses make it no surprise that fans received “Highway Queen” positively on the road.
We’re glad to finally have the recorded version, and we’ll be playing it on repeat.
