Around a month ago we spotlighted the Cancellations and their song “Waiting for a UFO” as one of our DJ Picks of the Week. We still can’t get enough of their debut album Fist Fight! Now, they’re our Local Artist of the Week.
The band was formed by Elijah Jones along with Erik Matthijs, Jared Wuestenberg, Nicholas Ferrel, and Ethan Hall. Jones and Matthijs met in Atlanta back in 2014 and then reconnected in Music City in 2017 to form their earlier group Elijah Jones and the Tenderness. That band has since disbanded, and with the help of some other local friends, they recently got together as the Cancellations.
Although they’ve only been releasing music since October of last year they’re already picking up traction. Self-described as “power-pop rock,” the band is careful to make honest music about their own lives in all their ups and downs. In an interview with the Nashville Scene, Jones explained, “The music industry is broken. If there are any rules anymore, they’re hardly worth following, so we’re making music we like about experience we’ve had.” Themes include heartbreak, substance abuse, and self-discovery, among others. So far, they’re being rewarded for their transparency.
“In the Middle of Nowhere” is Fist Fight’s opener. It’s driving, catchy, and sure to hook listeners in for the rest of the album.
We’ll be playing “In the Middle of Nowhere” throughout the week as we feature the Cancellations as our Local Artist of the Week. Catch it live on-air at 100.1FM on your dial or streaming live at lightning100.com.
