Beabadoobee – “Talk”: DJ Pick of the Week

“Talk” by beabadoobee is Stephanie’s DJ Pick of the Week! Beabadoobee is the stage name of Beatrice Laus, a Filipino singer-songwriter based in London, England. She grew up listening to both traditional Filipino music and pop/rock, and first played music at age ten on violin. However, she found a passion for guitar at age seventeen, learning to play through YouTube tutorials. Laus uploaded her first original song to YouTube in 2017, catching the attention of indie label Dirty Hit Records. She signed with the label in 2018, releasing her debut album, five EPs, and a multitude of singles under their umbrella.

Beabadoobee’s style varies between songs, with “Talk” landing somewhere between alternative and indie rock. The song features grungy guitar, simplistic bass, and moderately heavy drums. While the overall energy level remains consistent throughout the song, the guitar and bass solo brings out the best of the instrumental section. Meanwhile, Laus’ vocals are smooth and sweet, despite the gritty effects applied. Her lyrics are simple in principle, yet express her raw emotion at a level similar to that of early 2000s rock and alternative.

Beabadoobee released “Talk” as a preview of her upcoming album Beatopia. The album drops July 15th, with both pre-saves for streaming and physical pre-orders available now. Beabadoobee will be performing shows throughout 2022, including a US tour this spring. Tickets for her solo tour are available here. In addition, she will perform as an opening act in a few shows along Halsey’s 2022 tour, including a May 24th show in Franklin.
