“I Hate The Beatles” by Sofia Valdes is Casey’s DJ Pick of the Week! Sofia Valdes is a pop singer-songwriter and guitarist based in Los Angeles, California. Originally from Panama, she migrated to the United States at the age of 15 to continue her schooling. She debuted her music career in 2020 with “The Sweet Escape”, followed by an EP and additional singles. Valdes’ style is hard to place into one category, as she prefers to explore various sounds and emotions in her songs. As a result, her musical inspiration ranges from The Beatles and Motown, to broader themes such as Bossa Nova and Cuban music.
Sofia Valdes’ music is always rooted in personal experiences, and “I Hate The Beatles” is no exception. The song takes its name from the conflict between her love for The Beatles and how her exes shared those feelings. The instrumentation is minimalistic, from the acoustic drums to her skillful harmonies on guitar. Additional layers form as the song progresses, but the overall character remains consistent. On the other hand, Valdes’ vocals convey a level of intimacy and raw emotion only found in personal stories.
“I Hate The Beatles” is Valdes’ first musical release in 2022, dropping alongside a music video directed by Satchel Lee. She has teased the possibility of a new EP coming soon, albeit without a release date. In addition, Valdes will perform at a handful of live shows later this spring; tickets for these events are available here. Otherwise, be sure to keep up with Sofia Valdes through her social media, as well as her website. Also, feel free to check out the official music video for “I Hate The Beatles” below!
