Steph’s DJ Pick of the Week is “Mood Ring,” the newest single from Dehd!
The three-piece indie rock band’s newest release “Mood Ring,” is a song from their upcoming fifth studio album Poetry. Consisting of Emily Kempf, Jason Balla, and Erci McGrady, the band has been able to curate an eclectic discography since their start in 2015. This announcement of Poetry follows their successful fourth album Blue Skies, which released in 2022.
“Mood Ring” is a track perfect for Valentine’s Day- a fuzzy-feeling indie song about falling for a boy on a motorcycle. It’s a great kickoff to their newest era; it blends their usual groovy, indie sonics with a catchy chorus. Perhaps the strongest part of the song comes within the first twenty seconds. It starts with a hard guitar riff and drum fill that immediately melts away when the lyrics come in. This brings a unique duality to the track. From the recording to the fine-toothed production, this track is one that is easily memorable and replay-able.
This song, and the album as a whole, features the co-production work of Balla and Ziyad Asrar of Whitney. This actually marks the first time in the band’s history they’ve utilized outside help in production. Especially following the release of “Mood Ring,” the entire album will be uniquely produced and mixed. While reminiscing on the album’s curation, Kempf notes “Eating, Sleeping, Breathing, Living – our only purpose was to write.” Perhaps writing in an off-grid Earthship in New Mexico was the thing Dehd needed. Certainly, Poetry is going to be a musically diverse album for the three-piece. With the release date of May 10, we’re likely to get more singles before the album is officially ours!
