Rev’s pick this week is “Fireworks” by the band Joseph. This tune is a definite earworm, focusing on refusing to settle for a love that isn’t explosive, like fireworks.
Joseph’s members have an easy chemistry, their three part harmonies blending seamlessly. This is no surprise, considering the members are sisters. The band formed after Natalie Closner Schepman recruited her younger twin sisters Meegan and Allison to join her on vocals for a new project. After discovering their musical synergy, the sisters decided to put out music together. Joseph self-released their debut album Native Dreamer Kin in 2014, and built a following playing intimate house shows as a trio accompanied by acoustic guitar and foot drum.
“Fireworks” is off of Joseph’s fourth LP The Sun. The LP explores a bold new pop sound, keeping the band’s iconic three part harmonies at the forefront. “Fireworks” is a bright and playful track, with lyrics that question settling down. Is it right, or just easy? Allison explained to Total Entertainment some of the inspiration for the song, citing watching Love Island. While everyone’s type was tall, dark, and handsome, she wondered why no one chose fireworks instead. “There’s a line in the song, ‘I don’t want to just settle now, put my fire underground’, and to me it symbolizes wanting to feel like that fire is being fed by something deep and meaningful – not settling for anything less than FIREWORKS.”
