Canadian indie rock duo Kiwi Jr.’s “Cooler Returns” is, in a word, a blast. The upbeat track, a callback to the likes of “Blitzkrieg Bop,” exists first and foremost for its groove. And boy, does it deliver on that front. “Cooler Returns” is Stephanie’s DJ Pick of the Week!
Squarely at the intersection of The Strokes’ garage sensibilities and Car Seat Headrest’s detached snark, it’s practically destined for success. But it’s the band’s carefree, absurd delivery of the material that makes it work so well. Vocalist Jeremy Gaudet sounds like he couldn’t care less about anything other than having a good time as he rolls through the track’s hyper-referential lyrics. The same principle applies for listeners: why bog yourself down trying to make sense when the vibes are this good?
That sunny demeanor makes itself known immediately with the guitar riff which unifies the song. In a way reminiscent of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ best, you wonder how you haven’t heard this riff before. It practically demands you blast it driving down the highway with all your windows down. We’re certain this is going to soundtrack more than a few hangouts this summer. Check out the song’s balls-to-the-wall video below!
