Steph’s DJ Pick of the Week is Lorde’s cover of “Take Me To The River” by the Talking Heads!
A24 has teamed up with some of the biggest names in music to create a Talking Heads tribute album. The record features sixteen covers from the 1984 live album Stop Making Sense. Lorde’s cover is just a fraction of the talented covers that will be gracing the track list.
The cover album, entitled Everyone’s Getting Involved, is set to feature an eclectic group of artists. Girl in Red, Kevin Abstract, BadBadNotGood, and Blondshell are just a few of the artists who are paying homage to Talking Heads.
Lorde’s cover of “Take Me To The River” sits next to Paramore’s previously released cover of “Burning Down the House” and Teezo Touchdown’s “Making Flippy Floppy.” These three covers are unlike anything fans have seen before. Each artist has been able to lace their individual artistic styles with the work of the Talking Heads. In this way, it creates a wonderfully diverse LP.
In a note to fans following the release, Lorde wrote “It’s my interpretation of that pixelated spiritual experience. We did it fast, I didn’t let myself tidy it up too much, it had to feel young and imperfect, the peeling posters, the jaw of acne.”
The New Zealand singer-songwriter has an unconventional look at pop music. This becomes evident in her cover- it’s beautifully mixed but still a little odd and quirky. It fits perfectly into the compilation album.
