Lucy Dacus

“Kissing Lessons” by Lucy Dacus is Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week! Dacus is a singer-songwriter and music producer based in Richmond, Virginia. She independently released her debut album No Burden, which caught the attention of Matador Records. Since signing with Matador, Dacus has released two additional albums, an EP, and numerous singles. Her music is famous for its rich storytelling and indie rock roots.

The production behind “Kissing Lessons” draws heavily from rock music. The electric guitar and bass are punchy and gritty, with simplistic drums to back them up. On the other hand, the song features occasional interjections by a bright synthesizer and acoustic guitar. Lyrically, Dacus reflects on her childhood, talking about her friendship with another girl. The two try to help each other with their “boy problems”, but the situation ends up feeling romantic to Dacus. Ultimately, the two grow apart, but Dacus continues to wonder what happened to her friend. Her vocal delivery is calm and collected, with a hint of nostalgia behind it.

Dacus originally wrote and recorded “Kissing Lessons” as part of her 2021 album Home Video. The song ultimately didn’t make the cut, and at first fans only heard the song through live performances. The song released alongside a music video, which features a child actress portraying a young Dacus. “Kissing Lessons” and her other single “Thumbs Again” will release on a 7″ vinyl on June 3rd, with pre-orders available here. In addition, Dacus will be on tour in support of her 2021 album Home Video this spring. Until then, be sure to keep up with Lucy Dacus through her Facebook, Instagram, and website.
