The 1975

Rev’s DJ pick this week is “Oh Caroline” by The 1975! This playful love song is a summer anthem, with a bouncy beat and catchy lyrics.

The 1975 formed in 2002 as an english pop rock band. The lead vocalist, lyricist and rhythm guitarist Matty Healy, lead guitarist Adam Hann, bassist Ross MacDonald, and drummer and lyricist George Daniel met in secondary school, and began performing together as teenagers. After gaining momentum, the band began opening for names such as The Neighborhood, Muse, and The Rolling Stones. The band’s first album, The 1975, debuted at number one in the UK. Many successful albums and tours later, they released the album Being Funny In A Foreign Language in 2022, which includes the track “Oh Caroline”.

“Oh Caroline” is about unrequited love, the singer desperate for a chance with “Caroline”. Matty Healy described these lyrics as universal, a story anyone can relate to. “You don’t need to have lived a story to write one,” he told Apple Music. “Caroline is whoever you want it to be – you can change that name in your head.” Accompanied by an upbeat pop instrumental, this tune has undeniable sing along potential. With the combination of relatable lyrics and an ear catching melody, this track is a perfect fit for summer.
