Steph’s DJ Pick this week is “The Trench Coat Museum” By Yard Act. Accompanied by driving electric guitar and a beat to dance to, this tune will most definitely prick up your ears.
Formed in 2019, Yard Act came out of the gate swinging. Friends Ryan Needham and James Smith met through a split EP with their respective bands in 2016. After starting to create minimalist rock tracks using a primitive drum machine and borrowed bass guitar together, they knew they were on to something. The friends decided to recruit drummer George Townen and guitarist Sam Shipstone for a new band, Yard Act. Yard Act’s critically acclaimed, Mercury Prize shortlisted debut album The Overload was released in January 2022, immediately drawing attention. The group was “one to watch” in the BBC’s Sound of 2022 shortlist. Then on July 1st 2022, a re-recorded version of their song “100% Endurance” was released featuring a collaboration with Elton John. Needless to say, Yard Act’s upcoming album has us on the edge of our seat.
“The Trench Coat Museum” is a perfect example of the band’s explosive creativity. Co-produced by the band and Gorillaz member Remi Kabaka Jr., the standalone single is a lyrical study on ego, vanity, perception and legacy. “The Trench Coat Museum” recalls James Smith’s reaction to reaching a level of visibility. The changes “left us open to scrutiny and disdain just as much as love and appreciation.” Stay updated on all new releases and tour dates via Yard Act’s website here.
