“Waves” by Banditos is Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week! Banditos are a roots rock band from Birmingham, Alabama. Now residing in Nashville, the quintet includes vocalist Mary Beth Richardson, vocalist and guitarist Corey Parsons, drummer Randy Wade, guitarist Jeffery Salter, and vocalist, banjoist, and bassist Stephen Pierce. With two EPs in their catalog, the band has already established a name for themselves in the world of rock. The band’s new album Right On released on May 20 takes Banditos to a new level by developing the sultry and twangy sound that, since 2015, has characterized the band.
The third song on the new album, “Waves”, is clearly a highlight. A gradual transition from calm Americana to loud rock, this song is an exciting experience for any listener. Utilizing a variety of instruments, “Waves” represents the band’s ability to bend genre standards to make their vision come alive. Mary Beth’s vocals, packed with the soul of Janis Joplin and the elegance and control of Patsy Cline, are set on full display for this song. Beginning in a breathier tone in her lower range, Mary Beth works up to a full-voiced, powerful belt at the end of the song that is sure to send chills down your spine. “Waves” is an upbeat and lighthearted piece that delves into the pleasures of escapism—something many find themselves thinking about when the warm weather rolls around. Undoubtedly, “Waves” will become a summer playlist staple due to its fun tone and relatable meaning.
The Banditos played their album release show at The Basement on May 20. However, if you missed their May show, there’s still another chance to catch them in Nashville. The Banditos will be returning on July 14 for a show at The Basement East. Check out the details on the show here. Until then, be sure to check out Banditos’ new album, Right On.
