Our Frothy Monkey‘s local artist of the week is Drumming Bird with his new song “Roadkill Poetry”!

Drumming Bird’s latest single, “Roadkill Poetry,” is a cathartic, introspective road trip through an alt-country landscape. Nashville’s very own Austin Sawyer, the voice behind Drumming Bird, delivers on this track with his signature melodies and lyricism chock-full of biblical references and self-discovery.

The song opens with a simple, catchy little guitar riff that gradually builds as Sawyer’s breathy and twangy vocals take center stage. There’s certain rawness and honesty that has become a staple of Drumming Bird songs, and after a two-year hiatus, it’s clear he’s still got it. Lyrically, “Roadkill Poetry” speaks to the loyalty felt between two people in a close relationship. This doesn’t feel like it has to be romantic, as the line “I’m David in your holy light” alludes to a potentially platonic love that is often so hard to express.

The production is punchy and crisp but not overbearing, as each element has the space to breathe and effectively carry its weight. Drumming Bird has secured himself as a major player in Nashville’s Americana scene and his lyricism remains poignant and crushing.

“Roadkill Poetry” is just the first single from his upcoming album of the same name.
