Steph’s DJ pick of the week is “Spells” by Freak Slug
With a name like Freak Slug, expecting a grotesque, gritty, and visceral sound is only appropriate. Xenya Genovese, the mastermind behind the project, consistently finds a way to toe the line between darkness and playfulness. This new track, the first off an album rollout set to drop on November 8th, continues in this same vein. An upbeat bassline is topped with a crisp drum machine loop reminiscent of DIY punk outfits like Sneaks and Nashville’s very own Snõõper.
The official music video released alongside “Spells” is the perfect visual pairing. Grainy, old camcorder-style shots cut back and forth, further leaning into that gritty, DIY feel. It features two main characters: Freak Slug and Freak Bear (Freak Bear being a giant stuffed bear with her very own custom Slug merch). The pair share screen time, dancing and singing along to the lyrics soon to be stuck in your head: “And we’re both too shy to / tell each other I love you”.
The Manchester native sets off for a mini-tour around the US post-album release with LA, NYC, and Chicago dates during the month of December. It’s not hard to imagine how well this album is going to translate to a live setting with its distorted vocals and hard-cutting riffs. If you happen to be in one of those hubs, it will absolutely be worth going!
