Casey’s DJ pick of the week is “Run Free” by Tabitha Meeks.

What was that final word of advice at the end of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off?

“Life moves pretty fast – You don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

I can just imagine a young Tabitha Meeks perched criss-cross in front of her Grandma’s old CRT TV watching that VHS. Don’t blink or you’ll miss it. It seems like some themes never lose their pertinence.

With “Run Free,” Florida-born and Nashville-based singer-songwriter, Tabitha Meeks, is bringing a retro flair to the modern interpretation of living in the moment. Smooth, tremolo-soaked guitars layer beneath crisp percussion to create a doo-wop feel that can make a whole room sway. Electric piano is sprinkled throughout the track, creating a twinkly, almost ethereal bliss that boosts it’s dreamy, feel-good nature. Meeks’ vocals cut beautifully with sweeping melodies and cut-and-dry lyrics that still remain poignant. “Cause in the end everything’s gonna be okay,” she reassures us, “and life’s too short to waste another day.” Meeks’ excels at paying clear homage to her artistic influences like Norah Jones and Regina Spector while simultaneously separating herself as a unique force rising in Nashville’s pop scene.

Why worry about tomorrow when you could enjoy today? Put flowers in your hair, dance in the sun, run free! Hell, maybe even skip school and take a drop-top Ferrari for a joyride. And now you have the perfect soundtrack to do it.
